England take on Italy in both side’s first Group D match at the Arena Amazonia at Manaus. All eyes are on pitch of the stadium which has been getting lot of stick from both sides for its “unplayable condition” but there are more important aspects of the match to look at. The players for instance. Let’s look at the key players that will be involved in the England vs Italy match:
STAR PLAYERS
Wayne Rooney (England)
Now at the age of 28, Wayne Rooney is causing more doubt about his contribution to the England side on the world stage. In the World Cup in South Africa, the star failed to score a goal. But in Euro 2012, Rooney got three goals. So every England fan has their fingers crossed when it comes to how Rooney is feeling. Even then, beyond the goalscoring, Rooney is a gem for any side as he gives his heart and soul. The striker often comes tracking back and helps out his team’s defence. He is a tireless worker and could build a formidable partnership with Daniel Sturridge up-front.
Andrea Pirlo (Italy)
Getting better with age , the bearded Italian Legend has been the driving force for Juventus for the past two seasons and for the Azzurri as well. Pirlo’s slick play is central to all of Italy’s play. With his superb vision and utmost composure he can guide Italy to another World Cup victory. Although he won’t have Riccardo Montolivo alongside, he still has club mate Claudio Marchisio to help him when he needs. If England are serious about their World Cup challenge, they need to be serious when it comes to limiting Pirlo free space.
PLAYERS TO WATCH IN THE ENGLAND SQUAD
Steven Gerrard: As England’s leader, Steven Gerrard is an automatic starter. But that’s because he’s probably the most influential player in Roy Hodgson’s side. Now at the age of 33, this might be Stevie G’s last shot at the World Cup. A world-class dead-ball specialist, but now playing in a deeper role due to his age he will often be duelling with Andrea Pirlo.
Daniel Sturridge: The young striker had been superb for Liverpool last season. By grabbing some important goals and improving his goal tally, Sturridge has made tremendous strides when it comes to being a striker. For England he links up with his Liverpool team-mates well.
Leighton Baines: Having enjoyed his best season with Everton so far, Baines has become number one choice in the left-back position due to his heroic performances. So much so, that even one of the world’s best at the position – Ashley Cole had been pushed out and been forced to retire for England. Baines crosses well and makes important runs which help out in attacks for England. His free-kicks are classy too.
PLAYERS TO WATCH IN THE ITALY SQUAD
Mario Balotelli: Besides having a hot temper, Balotelli is one of the best players to watch with the ball at his feet. The striker is difficult to deal with and once the Italian becomes confident in the game, the opponent has had it. Balotelli boasts a mean shot and holds the ball up very well which bodes well for the Italian style of play. Remember he got a hat-trick against Germany in the semi-finals of Euro 2012.
Danielle De Rossi: This will be the midfielder’s third consecutive World Cup tournament with the Italian side. The Roma player made it onto the squad despite being banned for three games after punching an opponent during a game in March, and Prandelli being known for leaving players out due to bad behaviour. De Rossi is known for his crunching tackles and the midfielder is the soul of the Italian side in the middle.
Giorgio Chiellini: A complete rock at the center of Italy’s defence, Chiellini is known for brute force when it comes to tackling and defending. My no means is the Juventus defender’s style of defending elegant but you can bet on him to keep Italy in good shape at the back.
